Having mail tightly pressed to your waist with a belt or sash redistributes the weight from just your shoulders to shoulders and waist and makes it easier to wear. It's fully possible to make unique fantasy armor, making it look snazzy as fuck, while also making it plausible. Their armor is incredibly stylish as well as advanced and practical for its time. As for fantasy, Witcher to me has the best example of what you're talking about Czar, of any game I've ever played. Back when their shit was super Asiatic it looked fucking cool as hell. They're about the best examples, along with the Mongolians, on how to make Lamellar look really really good.
