And sure they would have reason to want to protect them, it’s their sacred duty, their whole purpose of being, even without that prophesy. A prophesy which to me wouldn’t make as much sense if it was just the last hereditary line of Dragonborn since you can simply continue a line through offspring. But would make sense to those that know a Dragonborn ain’t always picked that way. Course they could’ve also just thought the dB would be assassinsted or something. And it wouldn’t be meaningless for the purpose of the prophesy or to the blades as far as there being relatives in High Rock or wherever. Anyway, it’s not that important why he was in despair but I don’t think he’d be trying to warn people and say “you should’ve acted” and all that if he thought they were doomed from the get go since Martin is dead. At that point why bother, you’re already fucked. What else is there to do? Someone like Esbern I’m sure would be aware of the possibility of other Dragonborn. The prophesy stating there’d be one in this point in time would at least open him to that possibility. He may have been searching for one while the Thalmor were after him as he was studying dragon lore.

Even still, if it were truly hereditary at all I feel like unless Mehrunes knew because Daedra Lord that they were Dragonborn and knew their names and who to kill that there’d still be some that slip through the cracks.

Another reason why I always thought that was BS. The tie has to be to the amulet for Cyrodiil. It’s literally containing the blood of Akatosh and precious Emperors souls. It’s an ayleid soul gem. I think the amulet bestows the gift to those that “know” they are Dragonborn. That’s why it was so important that one, Martin said afterwards that he knew somehow that he knew the amulet would let him wear it, and two, that Mankar Comoran clearly believes he made himself Dragonborn with Mehrunes Razor. edit: previous, was supposed to be previous Emperors souls lol

Nah that still doesn’t check out because the way it’s written makes it sound like one would be gifted by the gods. And if his line continued, why would he be the last Dragonborn? Plus scholars are aware that Dragonborn aren’t all related and it’s not always a matter of heredity so Martin dying wouldn’t necessarily make them think the last Dragonborn wouldn’t come. I feel like someone like Esbern would be well aware of that.

If that’s the case then he didn’t have much faith in the very prophesy he studied so much and waited to come to pass, which regardless of all that I find odd.

If I saw everything else come to pass I’d hold hope that a Dragonborn would arise eventually. But after everything that happened with him, I get it. ”They’re already here,” suggests though that he was hopeful at least sometime after the dragons returned as far as when he lost hope. Assuming we’re still going by the trailer and assuming it’s not just quality trailer porn lol.

As for who he was addressing, that’s why I don’t think it matters really, could literally be to anyone And was obviously meant that way to get the point across. You know Bethesda doesn’t think this stuff out like we do lol.

Im thinking that Bethesda just wanted to make the trailer epic honestly. I doubt they coincide personally. But sure that interpretation fits. Though who knows when or what caused him to lose hope. Perhaps we spent too much time adventuring while he wasted away in hiding lol I do doubt that he’d have heard of the Dragonborn though and lose hope like that by the time we see him honestly.

As for the pattern of the prisoner’s actions having some negative effect on the place they did it, I’m not so sure about that. Daggerfall at least depending on what ending anyway was fine. Talos became a god, warp in the West ended the constant warring in High Rock. The worst thing to happen at most was Mannimarco in one of the timelines became a god.

I think he was talking to the people of Tamriel in general, not anyone specific. Pretty much anyone that would listen. Could’ve been a blade, the Empire, the Nords themselves. And the dragonborn’s return was a part of the prophesy so he could’ve said this just before he actually met the Dragonborn. He could’ve heard of him/her too from your actions in Whiterun.
